Baltimore City is an independent city. It is not part of Baltimore County, and it has its own mayor, city council, courts and permit offices. The county wraps around it on three sides but does not include it. That split confuses local search more than most owners expect.
Both places use the word "Baltimore." Many businesses in Towson, Pikesville, Catonsville and Dundalk have "Baltimore, MD" in their postal address even though they sit outside the city line. A search for "plumber Baltimore" can come from a rowhouse in Canton or a driveway in Parkville. Google decides what to show mostly from where that person is.
Inside the city, the neighborhood is the unit. People say they live in Hampden, Federal Hill, Locust Point or Charles Village, and they search the same way. A restaurant in Fells Point is not competing with one in Roland Park for the same dinner search. Each neighborhood has its own short list of businesses in the map results.
Density cuts both ways. In a compact city a customer may have many options within a few blocks. Being close is not enough when everyone is close. Complete profile details, recent reviews, accurate hours and a page that matches the exact service decide who gets the call.
Visitors search too. The Inner Harbor, the stadiums, the convention center, the hospitals and the universities bring in people who do not know the city. They search on a phone, often on foot, and choose from what the map shows them.
A note on where we are. Kause Marketing Agency is based at 3917 Sussana Rd in Randallstown, in Baltimore County, northwest of the city. We are not a downtown agency and we do not pretend to be. If your business is in the county, see our Baltimore County SEO page. If it is in the city, read on.
